Analysis of treatment of the symptoms of diseases


Abstract
This study is an analysis of treatment of the symptoms of diseases. From August of 1970 to March of 1971, 70 persons who live in Poocheon-Koon, Kyeonggido, 79 persons who live in Pyeukje-Myeon, Kyeonggido, 93 patients who were admitted to the Ewha Woman¢¥s University Hospital and Wonjoo Union Christian Hospital in Kangwon province, and 70 persons who live in Dai-hyeon-Dong were surveyed by a few specially trained students of the College of Nursing of Ewha Woman¢¥s University.
1) Background
Tatal number of the people surveyed was 312, of which 33.0% were men and 67.0% were women. With regard to age, the largest percentage of the people were in their thirties.
The main occupation was farming-21.2%
The education rate was ; graduated from primary school-43.9%
The religion was ; none-55.8%
2) The various methods of treatment of the symptoms of diseases
The first method of treating the symptoms was to go to the pharmacy and take some drugs-68.2% (of the total of 312).
The second method of treating the symptoms was to go to the oriental pharmacy, take the drugs and be treated by accupuncture-43.7% (of 258 persons).
The third method was to go to the hospital and be treated-50.6%. (of 158 persons).
The fourth method was to use herb mediciam; 47.7% (of 88 persons).
The fifth method was to go to an exorcism, or Divination-85.5% (of 62 persons).
3) About the cost of the various means of treatment
The cost of using the Hospital; £Ü 1,677¡¾309, Use of Pharmacy; £Ü 794¡¾284, Use of Oriental Pharmacy; £Ü971¡¾294, Use of exorcism, divination; £Ü 2942¡¾421, and lastly, the use of herb medicine; £Ü 1,922¡¾361.
4) The kinds of diseases, which are commonly treated with folk-medicine
The diseases, of type no. 9 (disease of degestive system) were 43.0% of the total cases, the second most common disease was type no. 8 (disease of respiratory system)-16.3%, and the third most common disease was type no. 6 (disease of neurosis and sensory organ) -12.2%. These are the three most common deseases of a total of 18.
The contents of folk-medicine were herbs, animal intestines and general food eaten raw or boilde for a long time.
5) Others
Most people like modern medicine -47.4% of the total survey, and the next most popular form of treatment was oriental medicine -36.2%, while other preferences equlled only -16.3%.
Number of times the home was visited by public health nurses: often visited -32.1%, rarely visited-27.4%, never visited-13.8%, no response -27.0%.
The reasons for the visit were health education -24.4%, Familly planning -18.6%, Vaccination done -18.6%, no response -39.8%.
In conclusion, the important responsibilities of the clinical and public health nurses while working together with medical workers are the prevention of disease, case finding, patient teaching, nursing care of the patient, and follow-up care after discharge. In these various ways the public heaith workers, especially the clinical and public health nurses will contribute to the betterment of the health of the community people.
